Abstract

Educational institutions in the future will increasingly focus upon the development of executive functioning in educating and guiding students. It has been the case over the past 200 years that the responsibility for this important preparation has fallen increasingly upon our educational systems. To function effectively, the brain requires an executive system. There is an increasing awareness of the influence of this system and its importance in controlling and managing ability, knowledge, and capacity to problem solve. This chapter provides an overview of the science of executive functioning, in particular focusing upon the role of executive functioning in writing for meaning.
